Operators in retail or food and beverage already know shoppers expect convenient, contactless ways to pay. In fact, almost half (53%) of U.S. consumers prefer contactless payments for in-store purchases, and that preference is even stronger among Gen Z, at 65%.*
But many are reluctant to introduce new checkout technology if it means replacing their POS system, switching payment processors, or reworking how transaction data flows into back-office reporting.
Just Walk Out technology by Amazon gives operators multiple ways to address that concern. It offers three integration models, so operators choose how much stays within their existing environment or how much Amazon manages.
Choose the integration model that fits the operation
Just Walk Out technology offers three integration models that give operators flexibility in how they manage payments and store systems.
Operators can keep both their payment processor and existing store systems, keep their existing payment processor while using Amazon retail systems, or delegate payment processing and retail systems to Amazon
Full delegation
With full delegation, operators keep their existing payment processor and integrate Just Walk Out technology with their current store systems.
This option suits established operations that want to retain more of their existing payment and POS environment. Amazon works with more than 30 certified integration partners and more than six payment processors globally to support these integrations.
Ordering by Amazon
Ordering by Amazon allows operators to keep their existing payment processor while using Amazon retail systems and expertise.
This option lets operators preserve an existing payment-processing relationship without requiring full integration with their current store systems.
Full integration
With the fully integrated option, operators delegate payment processing to Amazon and use fully managed Amazon retail systems.
This approach reduces the amount of integration work required at launch and provides a faster path to deployment for new and existing locations.
None of the integration choices are permanent. Operators can choose the approach that best fits their current environment and adjust it over time as their payment, POS, or deployment needs change.
Support for the ways shoppers pay
The flexibility of Just Walk Out technology extends beyond integration; it also applies to how shoppers can authenticate and pay.
Supported payment methods include**:
- Credit and debit cards
- Mobile wallets
- QR codes
- Employee badges and RFID credentials
- Student meal plans
- Employee payroll deduction
Some payment methods are specific to the organization or environment. Universities may connect campus meal plans, while employers may use employee badges or payroll deduction. Other environments may prioritize more familiar consumer payment methods. For example, a sports venue may rely on credit and debit cards and mobile wallets.
Shoppers can authenticate either when they enter or when they leave. Entry authentication works well in unattended or higher-risk environments, where shoppers verify a payment method before entering. And exit authentication reduces barriers to entry in lower-risk environments by letting shoppers walk in first and pay when they leave.
Higher education: Connect autonomous checkout to campus meal plans
Campus dining environments illustrate why payment integration cannot just rely on a standard credit card-only model. In most cases, students purchase food and other items through meal plans tied to campus accounts, apps, or credentials.
At the University of Dayton, students can purchase from the campus Just Walk Out technology-enabled store. Even though it accepts credit cards and mobile wallets, 96% of sales are made through the university’s campus meal plan through Just Walk Out technology’s meal plan integration. The store is also now open 24 hours a day, helping the university serve students during times that are hardest to staff, with 23% of all sales occurring between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.
Sports and entertainment: Support familiar contactless payments
Sports venues face a different payment challenge. During breaks in play, intermissions, and other peak traffic periods, large numbers of fans may try to make purchases within a short window of time. Familiar, fast payment methods help venues move more fans through concessions and get them back to their seats faster.
At Blue Cross Arena, VenuWorks converted two existing concession storefronts to Just Walk Out technology-enabled locations. Fans scan a payment method before entering, select what they want, and leave without stopping at a traditional checkout. The conversion did not require additional POS stations or an expanded storefront footprint.
The arena reported 41% revenue growth within six months of implementation. By the end of the season, 71% of shoppers were repeat users, indicating that fans appreciated the speed and convenience and continued using the stores after their initial visits.
Business and industry: Fit payment into the workplace
Corporate dining environments often require different payment options. Employees may use credit cards and mobile wallets, but at some workplaces, they may also use badges or payroll deductions tied to internal systems.
Just Walk Out technology supports account-based payment flows, allowing operators to connect autonomous checkout to payment methods employees already use.
At Unity Place, located on the ground floor of Santander’s headquarters building in Milton Keynes, employees can use workplace-specific payment methods supported by Just Walk Out technology. The retail environment recorded a 147% increase in sales while allowing employees to use payment methods already familiar to them.
Flexibility as operations scale
Just as payment methods can vary by environment, the systems behind them can change as an operation grows.
Operators may add or retire payment methods, expand into locations with different requirements, or adjust how much Amazon manages as their payment, POS, and operational needs evolve.
