Checkout-free apparel shopping: New applications of Just Walk Out technology

John Jenkins (JJ), VP of Just Walk Out at Amazon, and Bill Toney, Head of Global RFID Market Development at Avery Dennison, sat down at NRF’s Big Ideas stage in 2024 to talk RFID and frictionless checkout. Toney framed the show’s three big themes: consumer experience (retailers chasing NPS as shoppers return to physical stores post-COVID), labor optimization, and a shift from loss prevention to loss detection, using smart sensors to track what left the shelf instead of just stopping theft at the door. JJ walked through how Amazon paired Avery Dennison’s RFID tags with Just Walk Out gates to launch checkout-free merch stores at Globe Life Field (Texas Rangers), Hard Rock Stadium (Dolphins), and Lumen Field (Seahawks), after prototyping at Climate Pledge Arena. The pitch: shoppers grab a hoodie or foam finger, tap a card or scan their palm on an Amazon One device, and walk through a gate that reads the tag and charges them, no cameras, no cables, no line.
