re:Invent 2024: Autonomous Checkout Transforms Campus Dining at UC San Diego

How Just Walk Out technology solved peak-hour congestion and delivered measurable results across one of the nation’s largest residential university programs

UC San Diego serves 45,000 students across one of the largest residential dining programs in the country, and peak-hour queues of 200 to 300 students in 15-minute windows were limiting throughput and revenue. In this re:Invent 2024 session, UCSD shares how they deployed Just Walk Out technology across three high-volume markets to remove checkout friction, extend operating hours, and improve the student experience. Within the first year, the university saw an 18% increase in transactions, 9% revenue growth, 30% labor savings, and shrinkage reduced from 3% to under 0.5%, with plans now underway to expand into cafes, concessions, a campus bookstore, hotel, and medical center.
